Job Description

Position Summary

The MSU Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a Radiation Safety Officer to oversee all aspects of the university’s radiation safety program, including responsibilities associated with the management and maintenance of the university’s Type A Broadscope License, including related training, inspections, incident response, radiation storage, disposal, radiation safety committee activities, and supervision of the radiation safety staff.  In addition, this position is responsible for university laser safety and non-ionizing radiation safety programs at MSU.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally would be acquired by completing one to two years of post-bachelor degree work in Physics, Health Physics, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or a related field: one to three years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in radiation safety principles, concepts and regulations and broad scope license operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires licensure as Radiation Safety Officer by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in health physics, nuclear physics, or a closely related field or Bachelor’s degree in health physics or closely related field and certification by a specialty board such as the ABHP or ABMP and at least 5 years of experience covering a broad scope of radiation safety applications.

Successful candidates will have:

    • Knowledge of federal, state and local radiation safety regulations, protocols and procedures
    • Knowledge of current and developing issues, trends, and advances in the development and application of high technology materials
    • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
    • Excellent communication skills, in person and in writing, with a diverse range of people, including stakeholders, management, employees, unions, students, and the public.
    • Ability to develop and deliver training that meets both the regulatory requirements and the needs of the audience.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, and climbing for less than one hour per day (lifting equipment or ladders, carrying equipment and ladders, pulling cart with equipment, climbing stairs carrying equipment for inspections for sampling).

Summary of Health Risks

Exposure to human blood, serum, tissue, and other bodily fluids, and materials covered under the Universal Precautions.  Wear a respirator.  Work in a noisy environment (above 85 decibels).
