Job Description

Position Summary

Rice University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to join our Environmental Health Safety and Laboratory Operations team. The RSO will be responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of radiation safety across the university to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves developing and implementing radiation safety programs, including Radioactive Material, X-ray producing devices, and Lasers. This will include conducting training sessions, performing audits, and serving as a key point of contact for radiation-related issues.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or a science related field.
  • 3 years in related field
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted
  • Skills
    • Excellent communication, training, and presentation skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Proficiency in radiation detection and measurement instruments.
    • Experience in safety requirements and compliance related to laboratories.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
    • Able to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Ability to walk long distances and lift items up to 40 lbs.
    • Ability to wear 1/2 face and full face respiration protection.

Workplace Requirements:

  • Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators, and respond to health and safety emergencies.
  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs and climb stairs.
  • On campus work schedule (not hybrid)

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable radiation safety regulations and guidelines, including those set by the NRC, OSHA, and Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs and policies to minimize radiation exposure and ensure the safety of personnel and the environment.
  • Provide basic emergency response and investigation in case of chemical spills or incidents.
  • Conduct training sessions for faculty, staff, and students on radiation safety practices, proper use of radiation equipment, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform regular audits, inspections, and surveys of radiation facilities, equipment, and laboratories to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses for radiation use and provide recommendations for risk mitigation.
  • Lead investigations and response efforts for radiation incidents or emergencies, including contamination control, decontamination procedures, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain accurate records of all radioactive materials, including their procurement, use, storage, and disposal.
  • Work closely with faculty, researchers, and laboratory personnel to provide guidance and support for radiation safety-related matters.
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Enforce university radiation safety policies and procedures, and take corrective actions as necessary to address non-compliance issues.

Additional Functions:

  • Ability to provide comprehensive laboratory safety training to laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to be trained in multidiscipline roles in all areas of EHSLO including life, fire, biological, chemical, and occupational safety.
  • Serve as essential personnel in support of campus laboratories and facilities in emergency situations and adverse weather conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
