Chief of Staff

Based in Detroit, MI

Position Summary:
The Chief of Staff is responsible for the alignment and oversight of SEIU Health Care Michigan’s programmatic and operational work in support of our strategic goals. This is a senior management position responsible for the development and execution of a wide range of organizational priorities. The Chief of Staff speaks and acts for the President and/or Officers in a wide variety of roles and situations. Together with the Officers, the Executive Board, and Executive Leadership Team, the Chief of Staff determines overall strategies and key priorities of the Local.

Essential Job Functions:
Organizational Alignment & Oversight

  • Together with the Officers, supports the development of HCMI strategic goals and organizational strategy.
  • Ensures strategy alignment and achieving organizational outcomes through the work of departments and cross-departmental work teams.
  • Supervision of Program-level Directors including Field, Communications, Politics, Growth, IT/Data, Operations and Growth.
  • Chief internal communicator. Ensures that the various staff departments and teams communicate among themselves abundantly, clearly, and effectively.
  • Directs and collaborates with Operations, Field and Program directors to ensure development, implementation, and enforcement of union-wide talent management and human resource systems across departments.
  • Oversees the design and implementation of union-wide staff and Board development and learning programs
  • Delegated by the President to manage the day-to-day operation of specific union functions and programs.
  • Leads and/or participates in special project teams (ex: Convention)
  • Works closely with each Department Director to ensure coordination and communication among and between teams.
  • Leads the planning and execution of the regular system of statewide communications with staff and members.    
  • Assists the President with annual strategic and budget planning, and with budget administration.
  • Acts as the personal representative of the President on various internal and external assignments.

  • Assists the President in communicating the vision, mission, and values of the organization to our staff, members and external partners.
  • Ensures outstanding representation of the organization to internal and external allies and constituents.
  • Assists the President with the administration of the Executive Board and the other legal and constitutional Governance functions of the union, including Convention and Executive Board meetings
  • May represent the Union on external boards or committees inside and outside of SEIU.

Other

  • May be delegated by the President to play specific roles in bargaining, employer relations, political campaigns, legislation, community relations and local union administration.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of organizational management, strategic planning and evaluation, development and team building, problem solving, and multi-tasking
  • Work effectively with members and staff from diverse ethnic, social and economic groups
  • Exercise excellent judgment while working under pressure
  • Establish and uphold organizational priorities, standards and values
  • Manage leadership of multiple teams across diverse program and geographic areas
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Work effectively as part of senior leadership team.
  • Track record of meeting outcomes

Experience & Education:

  • 10+ years in a large labor organization, or an equivalent combination of advanced executive education, experience and skills in a comparable non-profit, political, or corporate environment.
  • Experience working with large organizational budgets, large staff teams and diverse constituencies.
  • Seasoned people manager with 6+ years of supervisory experience leading a managers’ team
  • A strong commitment to building a progressive labor movement through organizing the unorganized.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Chief of Staff reports directly to the President or her/his designee

Working Conditions:

  • Willingness and ability to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license, reliable use of car for work, and required automobile insurance
  • Willingness and ability to travel if required
  • Work is generally performed in the field with members and outside constituents.

Pay and Compensation Benefits: This position offers an annual salary range of $100,000-$120,000 SEIU staff receive excellent benefits, including comprehensive health coverage (major medical, dental, and vision) for employees and eligible dependents. Additional perks include generous holiday policies and a pension plan.
